Social Action

Tikkun olam, repairing the world, is a central principle of Judaism. The Social Action Committee supports Temple Solel’s commitment to tikkun olam by leading the congregation’s projects throughout the year to help those in need. Many of these projects are locally oriented, but the committee also has done work with a national and international focus, supporting the Jewish and non-Jewish community.

Some of our activities are listed below. Please contact the temple if you would like to learn more.

Drives:

  • Ongoing weekly food collection for the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry and Emergency Aid Fund. Baskets are in the lobby. For more information about the Food Pantry, you can download this newsletter.
  • Annual High Holiday food drive benefiting Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry and the Anne Arundel Food Bank
    • High Holiday Food Drive – 9/10-9/23 – Each year, the Social Action Committee makes a special effort during the High Holy  Days to help us follow the Biblical command to share our bread with the hungry by asking congregants to bring to temple bags of nonperishable food for the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry and the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. Please be sure to pick up a bag after evening or morning services on Rosh Hashanah; fliers will be attached to the bags listing needed items.

Donations to the food pantry and bank help address hunger in our localcommunity. We also ask you to consider a donation that will help hungry people elsewhere in our country and the world by using the MAZON envelope that is also attached to each bag.

  • Semi-annual blood drives for the American Red Cross or AAMC.  Next Blood Drive is 9/23.
